Understanding Texts & Readers: Strategies for Comprehension

Presented by Jennifer Serravallo

Comprehension instruction can feel challenging: the reader variables, text variables, and figuring out how to make visible what’s invisible in students’ minds. In this workshop, Jen will help comprehension make sense. Leaning on the four fiction and four nonfiction comprehension goals she presented in The Reading Strategies Book, she will walk you through how to use text levels as a teacher’s tool to know what to expect of readers’ written and oral responses level-by-level and goal-by-goal.

With a foundational understanding of text levels and student response, you’ll then explore the ways that this knowledge can help you find the right goals and strategies for students. You’ll work with case studies to plan a sensible path for each student.

Finally, Jen will discuss and show videos of a variety of methods of teaching—individual conferences, small group strategy lessons, and whole class instruction—that you can use to put strategies in action in the classroom to support your readers as they work toward comprehension goals.

Jen began her career in education as a NYC public school teacher and later joined the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University. Through TCRWP, and now as an independent consultant, she has spent over a decade helping teachers across the country to create literacy classrooms where students are joyfully engaged and the instruction is meaningfully individualized to students’ goals.
