About the Author
Tan Huynh is an experienced secondary educator, author, and consultant specializing in multilinguals. With a background spanning public and international schools, he currently focuses on developing MLs’ academic language in EAL classes and within their content classes. Trained in WIDA, MYP, and the Collaborative Instructional Cycle, Tan shares research-based, classroom-tested practices via his blog, podcast, and courses at TanKHuynh.com. In addition to teaching classes, Tan facilitates professional learning on practical ways to develop MLs’ academic language, especially experienced multilinguals.
Who Should Attend?
The MLs addressed in this series are students with highly developed social language who have not yet acquired academic language, especially in grades 4–12. This series does not address newcomers or MLs from kindergarten to grade 3.
This series is appropriate for:
- district coordinators of ML services
- ELD teachers grades 4-12
- instructional coaches
- content-area teachers, grades 6-12
- homeroom teachers grades 4-5
Why This Matters
The Need
Many districts are seeing a rise in enrollment of multilingual learners (MLs). Educators in this region are committed to providing equitable instruction to MLs, but many do not have the funding to hire enough qualified English language development (ELD) teachers. The responsibility then falls largely on dedicated classroom teachers and content-area specialists. However, because many have not gone through ML-oriented coursework during teacher education, there is a need to provide them with practical ML-focused professional learning.
The Offering
BBB Educational Enterprises is collaborating with Tan Huynh to provide a series of webinars to provide a cohort of educators with the opportunity to learn how to design accessible content-specific instruction for MLs. The basis for this series is Tan’s book, Long-Term Success for Experienced Multilinguals, a Corwin bestseller. Because the course is based on this book, districts can view the course as a book study with specific chapters highlighted by the live webinars. The guiding question for this series is, How can content-area teachers design instruction to deliver grade-level content to MLs who have social language but not academic language?
