Session Descriptions
Adolescent Literacy – October 2, 2026 – Wes Gordon
This professional learning session will equip school administrators with practical strategies to strengthen literacy outcomes for struggling adolescent readers. Participants will explore how age-appropriate decodable texts, explicit phonics instruction, and systematic foundational skills can help older students develop the decoding skills needed to access complex texts. The session will also address how leaders can identify foundational skill gaps, select dignified and engaging intervention materials, balance decoding with vocabulary and comprehension instruction, and support teachers through professional learning in structured literacy practices.
Cohesive Literacy Instruction – November 13, 2026 – Lisa Travis
This professional learning session will help school administrators build a cohesive, schoolwide approach to literacy instruction grounded in the science of reading and evidence-based practices. Participants will explore strategies for aligning curricula, assessment and intervention systems; protecting collaborative planning time; developing instructional leadership structures; and using student data to guide instructional decisions and resource allocation. The session will emphasize creating consistent, collaborative systems that support effective literacy instruction and improved student outcomes across all grades and classrooms.
Federal Budgeting and Amendments – December 11, 2026 – Lakeyella Nichols (Lead) & Jason Isaacs
This professional learning session will help district administrators strengthen their understanding of the federal budgeting process, from initial planning and budget development through implementation, monitoring, and amendments. Participants will explore strategies for developing budgets that align federal funds with identified needs and program requirements, determining allowable uses of funds, monitoring expenditures and available balances, and making timely budget adjustments throughout the year. The session will also address planning and facilitating effective budget and amendment meetings with school-level staff, coordinating with finance and other district personnel, and maintaining the documentation necessary to support sound fiscal decisions and federal program compliance.
Math Fluency – January 22, 2027 – LeShell Smith
This professional learning session will help school administrators develop a schoolwide approach to math fluency that emphasizes accuracy, efficiency, and flexible mathematical reasoning rather than rote memorization. Participants will explore leadership strategies for prioritizing essential grade-level standards, strengthening conceptual understanding through visual models and mathematical discourse, supporting teachers in developing students’ fluency over time, and using classroom walkthroughs to monitor meaningful problem-solving and reasoning. The session will focus on creating instructional conditions that help students become confident, flexible, and strategic mathematical thinkers.
Summer School Planning – February 12, 2027 – Wes Gordon
This professional learning session will help school administrators develop effective, data-driven summer learning programs that address unfinished learning and prepare students for success in the upcoming school year. Participants will explore strategies for analyzing student data, identifying high-priority learning needs, selecting targeted interventions, structuring small-group instruction, and building staff capacity through focused professional development. The session will also emphasize strong attendance, site leadership, and alignment with MTSS so that summer learning data and supports transition seamlessly into the fall.
