8:30-12:00: Workshop
Overview:
This half-day workshop will provide ready-to-use strategies to foster academic language and disciplinary literacy development among all students— ELs/MLs and English-proficient learners alike. While the session will address the challenges that educators face when they have ELs/MLs in their classrooms, the unique angle the presenter will take is to explore language and literacy learning opportunities that all students benefit from. These cross-cutting strategies will help unpack academic language at the word, sentence, and text levels and promote oracy and literacy among all students. Special attention will be paid to supports and scaffolds that are needed for ELs/MLs’ interpretive and expressive modes of communication to grow.
Essential Question:
How do we purposefully and consistently support multilingual learners’ language and literacy development across core content areas?
Participants will:
1. Explore an asset-based approach to serving ELs/MLs
2. Identify appropriate language development structures and literacy routines for rigor and engagement
3. Evaluate and apply instructional strategies that support ELs/MLs’ academic language and literacy development across proficiency levels
4. Receive a copy of Growing Language and Literacy K-8 or 6-12 (based on grade levels you serve)
