GLAS Workshop – Carl Anderson

GLAS Workshop – Carl Anderson

Help Students Meet Rigorous Writing Standards by Aligning Principles and Practice

How do we help students in all grade levels learn to write well and meet rigorous grade-level writing standards? The answer is to work on aligning our writing curriculums to the principles of effective writing instruction that the literacy field has come to understand over the last several decades.

In this full-day workshop, Carl Anderson, author of books on the teaching of writing such as How to Become a Better Writing Teacher (with Matt Glover), A Teacher’s Guide to Writing Conferences K-8, and A Teacher’s Guide to Mentor Texts K-5, will give you an overview of this curriculum alignment process:

  • He will discuss the principles of effective writing instruction, some of which include maximizing time for practicing writing, giving students differentiated feedback about their writing, helping students learn from more experienced writers by studying well-written mentor texts, and giving students explicit instruction in the craft of writing, how to navigate the writing process, and using writing conventions.
  • He will suggest adjustments you can make to your writing curriculum to help you better align it to the principles of good writing instruction. By making these adjustments, teachers will be better able to get the outcome they want of students learning how to write well, and meeting standards.

By the end of the day, you’ll have a clear sense of how to assess and improve your writing curriculums, no matter which one you’re using in your district.
