The workshop begins with examples of formative assessment, drawing from the Literacy Teacher’s Playbooks. In this part of the day, you’ll study a hierarchy of possible goals to guide how you use everyday classroom work to learn about your readers and writers.
With student goals in mind, Jen will help you understand the role of strategy instruction, drawing from her most recent books, The Reading Strategies Book and The Writing Strategies Book. You will learn how to craft and teach strategies to support reading and writing processes and skills.
The balance of the day will be spent learning about structures for teaching individuals and groups, including strategy lessons and various types of conferences. This portion of the day will draw from Jen’s books on conferring and small group instruction, and will utilize video of Jen teaching in real classrooms, so you can envision what it could look like in your own class.
Jen uses a very active, minds-on and hands-on approach in her workshops, helping you feel you can turn what you learned in the workshop directly into practice in your classrooms the next day. The day will end with a discussion of how to “fit it all in,” how to take effective notes, and how to manage yourself and your students during independent reading and writing time.
